Letter from Leadership

A letter from Vicki O’Malley, 2016 President of IREM Kansas City.

IREM Members and Industry Partners:

We are half-way through 2016 – where has the time gone? It seems like yesterday we were celebrating Christmas and the New Year. What about your New Year’s resolutions? Did you make any? Have you kept them? If not, it is not too late to pull them out and see how you can turnaround the second half of 2016.

If a resolution included networking more – IREM luncheons are a great way to network with your peers. The resources around a table each month are staggering. I’m not too proud to ask a peer a question that I am not that familiar with. In fact, I did just that this month when I asked a fellow member about the LEED certification process and her experience. Does it make me a lesser manager? I don’t think it does. As a property manager, we need to know a lot about many topics. I cannot be an expert in all but I do know when to reach out for assistance. I am also glad to offer assistance to anyone with a question. Not only are our peers a resource, so are our Industry Partners. I value a partner that I can call for advice on a particular problem or seek a second opinion. In my opinion, that is what being an IREM partner is – a resource and hopefully an integral part of my team.

Perhaps you vowed to take a class to move toward your CPM and/or ARM designation. IREM offers courses both online and in classroom settings. Kansas City hosted a few this year, however you can sign up anytime and take them online.

Maybe you wanted to get more involved. IREM professionals are forward thinkers who want to leave their mark on the world and care about the profession of real estate management. IREM Kansas City has many opportunities to volunteer. What about a mentor to a new manager on their path to their designation or what about serving on the IREM Board? There are also several committees looking for volunteers from the golf committee to the social committee. It is far too easy to sit back and let everyone do the work and enjoy the fruits of their labor. As I said during my inaugural speech, you get out of IREM what you put in. What are YOU putting in?

The second half of 2016 is busy. It started off with the golf tournament in June which was a huge success and wouldn’t be what it is today without all the hard work of our volunteers each and every year. Learn about Kansas City history on the trolley tour and networking event in August. In October, the Board heads to the National Conference in San Diego. We are so proud of Mike Lanning who will be inaugurated as the IREM National President and we will get to celebrate in his success and the success of the Kansas City Chapter. November will hear from industry experts on the state of real estate in Kansas City, and December we will inaugurate IREMKC’s new 2017 President and the Christmas party.

Again, it is not too late to turn around the year and your resolutions.
